Community Work at Kent Ridge Park

Community Work at Kent Ridge Park

This was one of the so called part time job i found during my clearing leave period... I managed to get to know this girl, called Brighton <---interesting name through WLNU... so from there, she was asking if I could do this community work.. It is about a morning event in which several GRC will be there for a morning walk. So the event company had to organise the route and other matters regarding the whole event.

I was fine with that so i agreed.... I had to attend to 2 site inspection, to get to know of the location and duties. In the end, I was assigned by the manager, Sam to do road marshalling.

The entrance to the bus park is a long winding road that has a few bends. The construction of the road made it impossible for two opposing bus to pass through, so there was a need for the marshalling. Since I and another guy, Kenneth were there for the inspection, he was only confident that we are good enough for the job.

The day started very early as i got up around 5am. Didnt get much sleep as i only got back home only 5 hours earlier. Upon reaching the site, we got prepared of our equipment like walkie-talkie, marshalling vest etc... During the wait, Sam made a final briefing to the rest on how they should perform later on when their individual groups have reached.

From my observations so far, Sam is definitely quite a character. To describe him, he is serious, yet funny, wordy yet poor in english, someone who demands quite a bit on the ppl under him especially Brighton. As what he likes to say, "its better to be more kiasu than to be complacent for the event." Think i heard him say that a couple of times.. haha

Well, the first bus got there pretty early, and work had to start. I and Kenneth had to then coordinate with each other such that the traffic flow from the entrance to the bus park is smooth and safe for all. I would say that we did a pretty good job. It was smooth and no major cock ups.Not bad for a first time road marshalling. There were quite a number groups that came. Once all have started their walk , it was rest time for me and Kenneth. We were basically left alone at our stations.

Work only restarted once the first group have finished their walk back to the bus park. That's where some confusion came in. Cases like bus driver do not know which GRC they are picking up, the chairman of the group missing, the groups do not know what are the license plate of their bus etc. Because the bus park can only accomodate 4 units at a time, i had to ensure that before the buses are being sent up, the groups are back. So i had to run along from group to group to communicate with the respective coordinators and leader of the GRC. Despite some minor hiccups, I and Kenneth still managed to get our jobs done.

One interesting incident was that a auntie was left out by her bus. The leader of her group apparently did not carry out a proper head count. Brighton had to then fetch her out to the nearby Mrt for her to travel back home.

After the debrief, we were allowed to be dismissed.

This activity is a monthly event, and said by Sam, he hopes to have a group of regular coordinator helping him out. Im still thinking it through whether can i committed to this. Ultimately, i Hope to fo into events work after I ORD, so i will see if there's any vacancy available in that company before making other plans ba...
